Ella

What did she do with it? Ella threw her sheets and pillows on the ground for the thirtieth time and scoured her mattress. It wasn’t there. Reaching for her duvet, she shook it out and scanned the floor.

Nothing.

An exasperated cry ripped through her chest as she tossed it to the side. Flopping herself down on the ground, she skimmed the floor with her hand before she peered under her bed.

Dust bunnies, shoe boxes, but no guitar pick.

Where the hell had she put it?

“It’s been two days,” Felicity said as she leaned against Ella’s bedroom doorframe. “I think it’s safe to say it’s gone.”

“But how? Like, where did it go?” Ella asked rhetorically as she sat back on her heels. Hopelessness crept into her chest, threatening to take hold.

What would she do if she couldn’t find it? It was the only thing he’d left behind. Or maybe he hadn’t. Had he taken it with him?

“Probably in the garbage. Why would you keep a guitar pick?” Felicity asked, interrupting Ella’s thoughts.

Tightening her lips into a thin line, Ella peered up at her friend. The valid point seemed in stark contrast to the illogical path they were on.

“I don’t know,” she huffed. But that stupid piece of plastic was all she had.

Then it hit her. “Dammit. I remember now. I gave it back to him. Without it, I’m back at square one.” A place she definitely didn’t want to be. “How else are we supposed to figure out what Gideon is?”

As wild as it sounded, she’d actually convinced herself that Auntie Josephine, the witch, had the answer. If Ella couldn’t produce the stupid guitar pick, then what? She’d be stuck horny as all fuck and tied to Gideon. Whatever that meant.

It didn’t sound pleasant. That was for damn sure.

“We could ask,” Felicity suggested.

Pushing up off her knees, Ella peered at her friend. “Who?”

Felicity shrugged. “Gideon.”

“We didn’t exactly exchange numbers.” Ella rolled her eyes. “It was supposed to be a no-strings-attached kind of thing.”

“Other shifters then.”

Ella stared at her friend in disbelief. Others? Just ask them? “Are there shifters around? How do we find them? How do we know?”

Felicity snickered. “There are plenty of shifters. They’re all over the place—hiding in plain sight. With more than one and a half million people in Manhattan, the odds are highly in our favor. Hell, he wasn’t even the only shifter we met that night. His friend was one too. There are plenty.”

Ella brought her hands to either side of her face, trying to keep up with all this information. She’d only just heard about nonhumans existing, and now they were everywhere. It was hard to believe. She only went along with it because she was desperate for relief, but all this otherworldly talk bordered on overwhelming.

“Fever is a popular spot for them. It’s very shifter friendly,” Felicity said nonchalantly. “It’s ladies’ night, so we can head over there.”

Ella’s head spun. Reaching for her bed, she slowly sat on the edge. “I’m sorry, what?”

Was Felicity really suggesting
